Reading food labels: what really matters
Nutrition table, ingredients list, marketing claims: how to find your way around the supermarket in a minute.
The ingredients list first
Ingredients are listed by quantity. Whatever comes first makes up the largest share. If sugar appears near the top in various forms, that's a clue.
The nutrition table
It shows the values per 100 grams, so you can compare products. Pay particular attention to:
- Sugar: especially in yoghurts, muesli and sauces
- Fibre: more is usually better
- Protein: helps you feel full
Watch out for marketing terms
'Light', 'fitness' or 'protein' on the packaging doesn't automatically mean a product suits your everyday life. A look at the ingredients tells you more than any promise.
Check the portion size
Some figures refer to a very small portion. It's better to compare the values per 100 grams.
My tip
Next time you go shopping, pick up two similar products and compare their ingredients lists. It sharpens your eye faster than any theory.
