Drinking enough every day: simple tricks that work
How much makes sense, why thirst often feels like hunger, and how drinking can become a habit without you having to think about it.
Roughly how much?
The Swiss Society for Nutrition recommends that adults drink 1 to 2 litres of unsweetened drinks a day. On hot days or when you exercise, it can be more.
Why it's worth it
If you drink too little, you often feel tired and find it hard to concentrate. On top of that, thirst sometimes feels like hunger. A glass of water before a snack helps you tell the difference.
Tricks that work in everyday life
- Keep it visible: a bottle on your desk rather than in the cupboard
- Link it to routines: a glass when you get up, one with every meal
- Add flavour: lemon, cucumber, mint or unsweetened tea
- Be prepared on the go: a bottle in your bag or car
What counts?
Water, mineral water and unsweetened tea. Coffee counts too, in normal amounts. Soft drinks and juices, on the other hand, contain a lot of sugar and are better kept as an exception.
My tip
Tomorrow morning, put a full bottle out and see how much is left in the evening. That's your honest starting point.
